It’s that spooky time of year again! What better way to celebrate Halloween than with some new pixel art?

This is a major update to Super Pixel Objects 2021 Edition, and adds both large (32×32) and small (16×16) versions of a variety of spooky new items.

This took me a little longer than expected to put together, but I’m really happy with the way all the new objects turned out, and that makes it worth it. As a Halloween treat, the new objects from this pack are available to all my patrons on Patreon, regardless of pledge! Join up today.

Hey everyone, I’m here for a Work-In-Progress Wednesday to show off what I’ve been working on!

This time, the focus is on some spooky upcoming Halloween art. First up, the next big asset pack: A mimic chest monster!

It begins as an unassuming treasure chest, but once opened reveals glowing red eyes, and deadly-sharp fangs!

Once the player gets near, it goes in for a chomp!

I’m looking forward to releasing the Mimic Chest asset pack this weekend. It’ll come in the same color themes and designs as the treasure chests in Super Pixel Objects 2021 Edition, so you can make safe chests as well as mimics!

Next up, more spooky art! This is an update to Super Pixel Objects 2021 Edition, introducing a variety of spine-chilling objects.

Cursed treasures, spirit orbs, and a gravedigger’s haul of skulls await!

The objects will all come in both 32×32 and 16×16 sizes. I’ve got plenty more in the works!

I’ve also been doing a lot of programming work on my game engine and tools. Nothing fancy to show off yet, just a lot of behind-the-scenes work like data serialization and editing capabilities. I’m looking forward to putting it to work within the next couple months- It’s going to power my games, my personal tools, and a new pixel art editor.

Hey everyone! For the first of many Halloween-themed updates, today I’m happy to present a long-awaited update to the Zombie Pack: Crawling animations!

Ever since it was requested, it had been something I wanted to add. However, I couldn’t make the time when I was doing freelance programming. Plus, the workflow for this asset pack wasn’t easy… Between the different variations (3 different heads, 2 different legs, 2 different arms, 7 color themes), there are 84 unique zombies. That means 6 recolors to do and 84 spritesheets to update. In the past, I did some crazy stuff with batch scripts to try and make it easier, but even then it was hard. More recently though I’ve improved my workflow overall with some new tools to help me out in this area, and I was able to make the update smoothly!

This update adds:

  • Crawl animation for all zombies!
  • Crawl death animation for all zombies!
  • To have a zombie emerge into a crawl animation, stop the emerge animation partway through (before the zombie would normally stand up) and switch to the crawl animation.

As a special Halloween treat, this pack has been made available for $5 patrons and up!

Hi everyone! New tileset today!!

I’m pleased to present my largest and most detailed, high-polished tileset yet: Super Pixel Sewer!

This is the eighth tileset in the Super Pixel series. Like its recent predecessors Ice Cavern and Laboratory, it has 30, 45, and 60 degree slopes as well as multiple midground pieces and tons of alternate terrain tiles.

Super Pixel Sewer takes it up a notch by adding dozens of decoration pieces and game objects!

It includes destructible blocks, toxic barrels, an elevator, spikes, and a flow control station.

Decoration-wise, it includes all-new larger sizes of decoration pieces, going all the way up to 128x128px. The archway and stone columns are my favorites!

As always, it also includes extra color themes! I did three color themes total this time.

Hey everyone, I’m here for a Work-In-Progress Wednesday to show off what I’ve been working on!

Remember the alien-looking environment from a couple posts ago?

I’m working on some character asset packs to go along with it! The first one is a sci-fi soldier.

I’m really looking forward to animating him! He’s going to have a few different attack animations, including multiple-direction aiming and firing. It’ll be the perfect hero character for the new alien environments!

He’s gonna need something to shoot though, right? An alien environment definitely needs some aliens. Maybe one will come out of this mysterious egg?

Next, a sneak peek at an Atmocopter enemy!

This little dude is a Zapper. It uses its claws to climb up and down electrified poles! Here it is in-game:

Every so often, the Zapper will stop and fire at Atmocopter. The actual firing isn’t complete yet, but he does stop and play a little firing animation. Atmocopter can’t pass through the electrified poles. Defeating the Zapper will destroy the poles, allowing Atmocopter to continue. I love how this enemy turned out!

Hey everyone, I’m here for a Work-In-Progress Wednesday to show off what I’ve been working on!

First, I’d like to introduce the next tileset in the Super Pixel series: Super Pixel Sewer! You saw a bit of it last week, and now it’s fleshed out with many more decorative elements. I’m still working on backgrounds and terrain layout for the example image.

I’ve been adding more decorations in much larger variations and in sizes up to 128×128. Starting with Sewer, future tilesets will be able to have much larger and unique props! Here are some detail views:

I’m so excited- It’s one of my most detailed tilesets yet!

Next, I know some of you have been wondering about Atmocopter. The last time I demonstrated the game in public was March 2020, but development has continued slowly. I made the decision to move away from Java and libGDX, and transition to C++ and SFML, while redesigning my game engine along the way. I’m making good progress every week on it, but the re-coding of Atmocopter with the new language and engine hasn’t started yet.

While I work on the engine, I’ve been tinkering with the art style of Atmocopter. The tileset used in the game is one that evolved over a number of years, and it felt like it was time to redo the environment art properly. This is a work-in-progress look at one of the tilesets that will appear in the game:

That’s not all the Atmocopter news. As many of you know, I’m a fan of Low Rez Jam, but haven’t made an entry to the jam since Demon’s Hymn 2 in 2018. Actually, in 2020, I started working on a game for Low Rez Jam which never released… At least not yet!

This is Atmocopter Mini!

It started out as just a mockup (above), and then I began the process of turning it into a real game. The physics were a little hard to translate from the high-resolution version of Atmocopter down to 64×64, but it was fun!

Somehow, the art turned out to look even cuter than the full version, which of course makes it all the better when you explode into pieces or get sliced in half.

With Atmocopter Mini, I also decided to experiment with some new mechanics and ideas, including a long-range, multi-directional claw grab and a giant fan that you have to spin to get past.

Not all of these ideas will make it into the final game (Mini or Atmocopter proper), but Atmocopter Mini has already proven itself a great place to experiment with new ideas, without the higher-resolution art commitment. It’s a nice little test environment!

Here’s a couple more behind-the-scenes pics.

The first Atmocopter Mini test… In a Demon’s Hymn 2 level! And yes… In those first builds Atmocopter would bleed when hit, a leftover from Demon’s Hymn 2.

So, long story short, Atmocopter Mini got left on the cutting room floor while my commitment to FUZE work grew. I’ll come back to it someday, either as a full game or as a bonus game-in-a-game as part of the real Atmocopter. In the meantime, I’ll release the unfinished Atmocopter Mini as a demo this Fall!

Hi everyone!

Here’s the latest and greatest sci-fi tileset, ready for your game: Super Pixel Laboratory!

This is the sixth tileset in the Super Pixel series, and builds on the format Super Pixel Meadow pioneered with even more tiles, and even more ways to use them! It includes 30, 45, and 60 degree slopes as well as TONS of alternate terrain tiles to make every platform in your level unique.

I love how this tileset turned out! The fog and ominous giant tubes of liquid in the background gives it a kind of eerie atmosphere. There are four color themes included!

One of the really cool things about this tileset is that it’s designed so that the terrain fill pieces (the dark panels with lights, for example) can also be used together with the midground pieces, giving the midground of this tileset an unprecedented level of flexibility!

So, long story short, Atmocopter Mini got left on the cutting room floor while my commitment to FUZE work grew. I’ll come back to it someday, either as a full game or as a bonus game-in-a-game as part of the real Atmocopter. In the meantime, I’ll release the unfinished Atmocopter Mini as a demo this Fall!

Hi everyone!

Here’s the latest and greatest sci-fi tileset, ready for your game: Super Pixel Laboratory!

This is the sixth tileset in the Super Pixel series, and builds on the format Super Pixel Meadow pioneered with even more tiles, and even more ways to use them! It includes 30, 45, and 60 degree slopes as well as TONS of alternate terrain tiles to make every platform in your level unique.

I love how this tileset turned out! The fog and ominous giant tubes of liquid in the background gives it a kind of eerie atmosphere. There are four color themes included!

One of the really cool things about this tileset is that it’s designed so that the terrain fill pieces (the dark panels with lights, for example) can also be used together with the midground pieces, giving the midground of this tileset an unprecedented level of flexibility!
