Hey everyone! I’m happy to announce that Realm Rumble, the game I made for Low Rez Jam 2023, is released!

Download it here (Windows):

Read on for more details!

I was able to get the game to a spot I was pretty happy with, given the limited game jam time. However, I wasn’t able to fully implement towers! You can build them, but they don’t have attack logic yet. Nevertheless, the game functions as a pretty simple RTS, minus the tower defense aspect. It has two levels: The first features a swarm of goblins, pictured above. The second level offers a two-pronged attack, with a small goblin encampment in the northwest and a later attack from undead in the south.

In the current tower-less version, you can build academies, which let you train knights from the castle. To train stronger knights, build more academies! You can also build walls to block and delay enemies.

The game has been super fun to work on and I can’t wait to add more content! My next challenges include:

  • Finish implementing towers (of course!)
  • Improve visuals with depth sorting of units/buildings
  • Add more units, enemy buildings, and levels
  • Add pathfinding
  • Ranged units
  • Sound effects / music
  • Flying units
  • Units that change sprites based on which direction they face
  • Fog of war
  • Commanders with various active and passive skills
  • “Widescreen” version with higher resolution (post game jam)

…And more, I’m sure! I’m not sure if I’ll fit all of these into this version of the game, but we’ll see. I definitely want to make a larger version of this in the future!

Let me know if you encounter any technical issues running it. It’s the first public test of my new game engine, so I’m interested to hear how it runs.

I hope you enjoy the game! It was a blast to do game dev full time for the first time in a while. More updates will definitely be coming your way on this project! In the meantime, I’ll be in touch again next week with a look at the next pixel art pack. See you then!
